Dav Hojt: Getting started at kood/Jõhvi

Welcome to the (possible) beginning of your journey at kood/Jõhvi. Understanding what lies ahead is crucial whether you’re just thinking about applying, have already started your studies or hoping to make the most of your time at kood/Jõhvi.

This is the first part of a two-part series aimed at helping you navigate your year with us. In this post, we’ll hear from Dav Hojt, a key figure in our Curriculum Team, who shares valuable insights into what you can expect and how to approach this unique learning experience.

Learning to learn and problem-solving

Your journey at kood/Jõhvi is more than just learning a set of programming languages or technologies. The primary focus is on developing the skills of learning to learn and problem-solving. You’ll be exposed to various technologies, but the goal is to become adaptable and proficient in acquiring new skills quickly.

Why is this important? Because the tech landscape is ever-changing. Employers value individuals who can learn on the fly and tackle problems creatively. This year is about building a foundation that will prepare you for any challenge you face in your career.

Peer-to-peer learning

The importance of peer reviews

Peer reviews are a key element of the curriculum. Until now, during the Selection Sprint, you may have been used to machine tests evaluating your work. However, moving forward, students will be responsible for reviewing each other’s projects. This method is crucial for developing a culture of constructive feedback and continuous improvement.

When giving feedback, be honest and thorough, but also graceful. It’s not just about pointing out what’s wrong but helping each other grow and ensuring everyone reaches the level they need to succeed. And when you receive feedback, take it as an opportunity to improve. Remember, you are helping shape the reputation of kood/Jõhvi and ensuring that each graduate is well-prepared for the industry.

Reputation is an asset

Your reputation is one of your most valuable assets. Being honest and thorough in your reviews not only aids your peers but also helps maintain the high standards of kood/Jõhvi graduates. Every alumnus contributes to the school’s reputation, making it easier for future graduates, including yourself, to find opportunities in the tech world.

Our curriculum team lead Dav Hojt has an impressive service design and product management background. His journey into software engineering was driven by a desire to understand the technical side of product development better. Not satisfied with merely coordinating with engineers, Dav took the plunge into learning software engineering at 42 in Paris. This experience not only enriched his understanding but also led him to pursue a career in this field.
He moved through various roles from software developer to technical product manager, engineering manager, and eventually, Chief Product Officer. Now, he’s channelling his passion into contributing to the growth of students at kood/Jõhvi, helping them prepare for a successful career in tech.
