How to gain practical experience to land a job in tech

14.11.2024

Finding your first job in tech might feel challenging. However, you can increase your chances of being a successful applicant by gaining experience in projects such as mock interviews and job shadowing. These initiatives bridge the gap between education and real-world experience. At kood/Jõhvi we provide our students such opportunities through partnerships with various organisations, such as SEB.

Practice makes perfect: The value of mock interviews

This year, SEB hired around 100 IT talents across the Baltics. Sander Aasna, SEB’s Tribe Lead, shared that in his experience, even candidates with impressive resumes sometimes struggle to articulate their skills during interviews. Mock interviews offer a pressure-free opportunity where candidates can build confidence, learn to present their strengths, and practise for real-life scenarios.

Mikk Adler, a kood/Jõhvi graduate now working as a software developer, reflected on his mock interview experience at SEB as very positive and useful. “Even when you think you’re fully prepared, the real setting is different, and every interview brings new lessons,” he shared. This practice helps students articulate their potential – a skill that is important also in their future work life.

Job shadowing: More than just observation

Job shadowing benefits both students and companies. It’s not just a chance to observe but an opportunity for self-reflection and growth for both sides. Shadowing helps job seekers gain a realistic view of workplace dynamics and how their skills are applied in practice. Plus, the opportunity offers a unique glimpse into organisational life that studying can’t replicate.

In September, nine kood/Jõhvi students visited SEB for a job-shadowing day. They gained insights into how large teams operate and how their skills could fir into real-life projects. These experiences provide students with fresh and inspiring perspectives and companies with the opportunity to meet future talent.

Tips for future tech professionals

The job search requires effort, but with the right mindset, you can stand out. Here are some tips from SEB:

  1. Understand your audience: Tailor your CV and personal story to align with what the hiring manager is looking for. Show that you’ve researched the role and understand the company’s needs.
  2. Highlight relevant skills: Especially if you’re entering the tech sector, show first your experience in areas like mathematics, logic, and problem-solving, because these could be linked to jobs in tech. Structure your CV to focus on the relevant skills.
  3. Catch the attention quickly: Remember, recruiters often have limited time to review each CV. Use the first 10 seconds wisely to spotlight your strengths and relevant projects.
  4. Gain practical experience: Mock interviews, job shadowing, and internships are important for building skills that help you shine in a competitive job market.

Investing in these experiences builds confidence and improves your chances in today’s job market. In the end, it’s practical experience, attitude, and fit with the team that lands you the job.
