Widening the Future: how //kood is bringing programming education to Estonian schools
Estonia has long been a leader in digital education, but even in a tech-forward country, access to quality programming education varies across regions. That’s why //kood is expanding its educational offering to schools across Estonia—an initiative that started in Võrumaa, where local leaders in South-Estonia saw an opportunity to future-proof their region, far from the capital.
Why did it start in Võrumaa?
In Võrumaa, educators and local leaders recognised a challenge: how to prepare students for a digital future without easy access to practiocal IT education. They saw kood/Jõhvi’s self-paced, peer-learning model as a perfect fit for their schools, providing students with flexible and practical programming courses.
By introducing these courses in local schools, Võrumaa took a pioneering step, ensuring young people in the region gain essential digital skills—ones that will not only help them in Estonia’s job market but also give them a global edge.
Bringing coding to schools across Estonia
Inspired by Võrumaa’s initiative, kood/Jõhvi is now offering programming courses to schools nationwide. Tallinn has already joined the initiative, with ten high schools integrating these courses into their curriculum from autumn 2025.
The available courses are:
✅ Introduction to Programming – a beginner-friendly gateway into coding
✅ Web Development – building websites and interactive applications
✅ Data Analysis – understanding and working with data
Students can complete these courses at their own pace, learning through hands-on challenges in a format similar to how adult learners study at kood/Jõhvi. This means they’re solving real problems and working collaboratively, just like in the tech industry.

💡 And these courses aren’t just for high schoolers! While the program was originally designed for gymnasium-level students, many of the core concepts—like logic, problem-solving, and basic coding—can be valuable for younger students as well. Schools interested in introducing digital skills earlier can also explore how these courses fit into their curriculum.
kood/Võru – a new opportunity for adult learners
Recognising the demand for digital skills beyond high school, kood/Jõhvi is also opening kood/Võru, a new campus for adult learners, with support from the Võru Development Centre. This means that reskilling opportunities in tech will now be available directly in South Estonia, making it easier for locals to transition into IT careers without relocating to bigger cities. Whether you’re a career switcher, entrepreneur, or just curious about coding, kood/Võru will offer a modern, peer-driven learning environment that has already helped hundreds of graduates break into the tech industry.
Why it matters
According to ICT workforce studies, Estonia needs a steady pipeline of IT specialists to keep up with demand. By bringing programming courses into schools, we’re helping students develop valuable skills early on, making it easier for them to pursue careers in tech—or simply become more tech-literate, no matter their future profession.
As Tallinn’s Deputy Mayor Aleksei Jašin put it, these skills are key to helping students make better career choices and prepare for the future job market.
Your school can join too!

This isn’t just for Tallinn and Võrumaa—any school in Estonia can offer these courses. Schools interested in providing students with practical digital skills and future career opportunities can now integrate kood/Jõhvi’s programming courses into their curriculum.
